New Policing Model for Durham Region; GOOD NEWS for Whitby

So the complaints for residents around Whitby has been the response time to their calls; sometimes there is no response.  The feedback from the police was the amount of police that we available each evening.

Effective in January the model of policing across the Region of Durham has changed.  There has been an extensive review of data and workload for officers and now a realignment will bring more officers into our community.  This is especially good for the downtown area as this is now its own area.

Chief Ewles made presentation to the Town Council and shared the new format and outlined how there will be more officers for our community to access.  This is GOOD NEWS.

There will be continuous review of the format to make adjustments to the areas of allocation.

We look forward to continuous working relationships with the DRPS.

Flower Baskets and Bicylce Racks

Decision to have Flower Baskets and Bicycle Racks in our Downtowns!

Whitby council has supported the installation of bicycle racks in Downtown Whitby.  These will be installed in the upcoming spring months.

Also to come to the downtown is Hanging Flower Baskets.  The funding for this still has to be decided upon during the 2010 budget process.

These two things do not come without controversy.

The Toronto Star recently wrote an article with respects to "Hanging Flower Baskets"; it was obviously a slow news week that Whitby makes the Toronto paper on an item like this.

Is it not time that our Whitby downtown was paid attention too?

Should not both our downtowns also not have the same approach; would this not create unification of our community?

A lot of the discussion/controversy downtown revolves back to the vandalism and the nightlife.  Let's start looking at the positive; let's start doing and not talking all the time about what can be done; or how you would do it.

There are few stepping up to the plate to make things better; but many who have an opinion.

Downtown Whitby should be a place that people are walking the streets; community supports local business.

The question that should be asked is "What can I do to help our downtown?"

We welcome and suggestions and any help that you may want to give.
You only need to email to downtownwhitb2010@live.com;

We wll gladly respond back to you.
